White Horse Needlepoint Pillow
This pillow dedicated to the memory of Eadweard J. Muybridge, pioneer in the use of multiple cameras to capture stop action images of motion. Born Edward James Muggeridge, it was Muybridges stop action photos of a galloping horse in 1877, that settled once and for all the fact that all four of a horses hooves do indeed leave the ground at the same instance during a gallop. The pose of the horse illustrated on this needlepoint pillow is in this moment of "unsupported transit".
The horse first photographed this way was 'Occident', owned by former Governor of California Leland Stanford, who purportedly netted $25,000 in wagers based on a single frame of Muybridges series.
